Yes! He is absolutely right. The Minolta 17-35mm lens is basically a re-branded 1st generation Tamron 17-35mm lens, with no image stabilization, and can be used on full frame Minolta film or the last digital Maxim 7 camera, or Sony A900, A99,  or any Sony A7 series camera with an LA-LEA 3 or 4 adapter.  If you want auto focus use a LEA-4. Buy used they are too expensive new.
It does seem to perform better on APS-C option.  (25.5 to 52.5mm equivalent)
You'll still get about 24 mgp. of information on an A7R 36 mgp. (1st generation camera,  in the A7R series)
Flashes used in TTL mode are a good idea when using older mid range lens too, which most of us don't want to do. But you'll notice Pro wedding photographers always have a flash on board. You won't get  as noticeable vignetting , when set properly with a full frame camera.
