Guys, by next year most SOOC (or SOOP?) photos will always favor the modern smartphone for less noise and better detail.
I predict the Pixel 4 coming out this October will be as good if not better than the M100 with the pancake 22mm.
Why? Because of the latest software post processing.
The Pixel utilizes multiple shots in a similar method to photo stacking to do its noise reduction. In addition ,the Pixel uses advance software artificial intelligence and machine deep learning algorithms to discern between noise vs. detail plus preserve moving detail coherence between stacked photos.
Taking a single photo and applying traditional NR methods is nowhere near the capability of multiple shots with AI noise reduction.
So is the Pixel cheating?.. by all means NO. IMO it's so frustrating to see big camera brands being so very much behind in this arena.
Today's post digital processing would yield 2-3 stop improvements in noise reduction vs traditional methods for any photo taking hardware.
Currently smartphones are the ones mostly benefiting from this amazing technology and not digital cameras.
Who's more serious about photography now?
sorry I'm a year late into the discussion. I just got back (intend to) into photography. Yes, it is truly frustrating because traditional brands are just not doing enough (or lack of budget?) to improve on processing, which would benefit their product immensely. Just imagine it - the great hardware from traditional brands + great processing from IT giants.... the best combi of all.
