Back when I had the 6D, I used the center spot exclusively in bad light or against moving subjects, but I made it a point to use the outer spots more freely when shooting portraits, as the subjects (usually) did not move or run away, and the thin DOF made focus and recomposing more challenging. The outer spots weren’t perfect but they worked well enough for this purpose.
