Things we learn from the 90D's review concerning the M6 II sensor.

Dpreview has just finished its 90D review. Since it uses the same sensor as the M6 mkII, I'll just quote some sentences from their review here:

From the Image quality section:

  • Image quality is noticeably improved across the board compared its 24MP predecessor [the M6 or 80D] and Raw IQ is on par with the best of its APS-C competition...
  • The 90D's lack of moiré suggests the presence of an anti alaising filter, unlike the a6400 (and D7500). So not only do you get class-leading Raw detail capture, you get it without the fear of moiré.
  • ..., in very dim lighting you can see a clear improvement in noise levels compared to the 80D.
  • The 90D has pretty good, but not outstanding dynamic range..... the result is comparable to its peers, though not class-leading.

Key takeaways:

  • Excellent Raw detail capture and high ISO noise performance
  • Pleasing JPEG color
  • Aggressive JPEG noise reduction smears away fine detail
  • Good raw dynamic range for class

And from the Conclusion page:

  • Canon's latest enthusiast APS-C DSLR represents a solid leap forward in image quality for this offers outstanding Raw detail capture and noise performance, up there with other class-leaders like the Sony a6400.
  • In terms of pure photographic muscle, the mirrorless Sony a6400 is one of the 90D's closest and toughest competitors.... However Canon's Raw image quality is a hair better than Sony's.

In my opinion Canon did a very good job with this APS-C sensor, with -as dpreview mentions- noticeable improvement in dynamic range and noise performance, while retaining the familiar Canon colors.
