Since you are dealing with a lens position, subject position or lens characteristic changing/moving during stacking, the effective angles of all involved are changing as well. Highly reflective subject areas are the most difficult and require high levels of diffused light.

So you're saying that moving a fraction of a millimeter closer to the subject between frames is actually making a difference in the angle of the light between the flash, subject, and sensor?...
