Since you are dealing with a lens position, subject position or lens characteristic changing/moving during stacking, the effective angles of all involved are changing as well. Highly reflective subject areas are the most difficult and require high levels of diffused light.

Some folks over at PM are actually moving the light sources as they stack to compensate for this change.
