as some might recall i am new to nikon, entered the nikon world with purchase of D800 body. my question is which macro lens is going to give the best IQ and sharpness, both of which are vital to me personally. thanks.

Nikon 200mm f/4 is, AFAIK, the sharpest and flattest-field macro going. Screw drive focus.

You can google the tests and see a) how sharp and b) how flat the images are.

Mine was great.

I agree -- the 200 f4 screw drive autofocus nikon is a great lens. The 105 f 2.8 is also quite good, as is the 60 mm f2.8 macro. I own all three -- but they have different uses. The 105 seem most versatile to me.

As I mentioned above, I LOVE my 200 f4 BUT it's NOT compatible with my D850's focus shift shooting feature. Wonder why?
