New A7R IV owner, used to have A7Riii and A9 - Huge AF improvements

I switched from the A9 to A7Riii last year, and then switched from the iii to IV last week.

Happy to report that the AF is much improved compared to iii. In particular:

  • Eye-AF now tracks from more angle
  • Tracking mode is now consolidated (used to have 2 tracking modes, Center Lock-on AND Lock-on AF). Now just Tracking AF, and it sticks on your subject really well
  • Tracking mode now works in video. Video used to rely on Center Lock-On, but now uses the new Tracking AF which moves with your subject better
  • AF mode is faster in slow-mo (although still no tracking)
  • AFC is about 5-10% better hit rate for subject moving perpendicular to focus plane

Overall, huge AF upgrade for me (stills and videos) which is why I bought this. I don't need the megapixels.

Just sharing experience for those on the fences. I know some users are reporting poor af with this but I am pretty sure it's mostly a configuration issue (Sony cameras has very poor UI, you really have to read the manual).

Sony a7R Sony a9
