With the camera off, press the "info" button.  This will display the time, temperature, a gigantic compass and altitude.  In the lower right corner it will show a little satellite and the lat/long coordinates.  If it can't get a lock, it will show underscores instead.

I think the tagging works pretty well.  I do a lot of kayaking and it's hit rate is probably at least 97%.  I used to use the Nikon W300 (rugged competitor to the TG series) and maybe only 70% of those images would be tagged correctly.  As mentioned if you are near or in buildings, obviously tagging will not be as successful.
