CK's Lens Post: Sigma AF 1000mm 1:8 APO (Initial Thoughts)
1

This lens is rather uncommon.  I could not find how many copies of this lens were made; but, it rarely shows up on eBay and other auction sites.  I had and sold a Sigma AF 400mm 1:5.6 APO, but I do not think its APO design is really a good APO one.  Anyway, this 1000/8 IS APO, perhaps around the same era (i.e., late 1980's).

My copy of this lens is for Canon EOS (i.e., EF) mount.  Because I do not have a good Canon DSLR body,  I have to use Sigma MC-11 to mount this lens to my Sony A7II body.  It is interesting to learn that the lens plus MC-11 reported f/5.6 to the Sony, which is one stop faster.  I read elsewhere that some lenses may report f/5.6 to the body to fool the body AF system to start AF, even though the lens has a maximum aperture smaller than f/5.6.  Another issue I encountered is that this lens rarely AF on my MC-11 and A7II  combo.  Most of time the AF confirmation light simply blinks, and fails to lock on the subject. Note that when I switch from MF to AF with a switch on the lens, the lens does move its focus mechanism.  This indicates that  the AF motor seems to be working.  However, I only need MF, and hope some day I could get a Canon 5D Mark III or IV to test this lens.

In general, this lens works well and reasonably sharp.  The following shows you a few static scenes at f/8 (f/5.6 as reported) and f/16 (f/11 as reported).  Please note that CA is rather clear at f/8.  The lens has 5 aperture settings: f/8, f/11, f/16, f/22 and f/32; however, what the MC-11 and A7II saw are f/5.6, f/8, f/11, f/16 and f/22.

Please also note the color rendition difference between f/8 and f/16.

Will report my further findings later.
