Why are my Powershots much better at nailing exposure?

I am a retired pro photographer of over 50 years experience. I have used Canon's former top of the line SLR's, up to the 1D IV, the 5DIII and 6D. Difficult shots, such as the bride coming down the aisle in an outdoor setting, walking through sun and shadows and the sun going in and out would cause me great stress. I knew using the auto mode was for armatures so I avoided it completely. Now using a SL2 and Powershots for personal work, I find the A-auto mode gives me more consistent and better exposures as opposed to the P-program mode no matter how I configure it. I should clarify most of my shooting is candid and I don't have the time to adjust settings. Any thoughts? Thanks
