Keeping lenses in the car?

I carry my camera all the time, usually with a few small prime lenses, to make it easy to carry, and most of the time I can work around the limitations of the lens as I have with me.

But periodically, I come across something that is beyond my prime lenses, such as today when a circle of vultures was close overhead, and one vulture came amazingly close and landed in a tree. Today we also had a three-quarter moon out in broad daylight and I managed to get a decent shot with my 50 mm prime. (My camera has an APS – C sensor so I have a crop factor of about 80 mm)

So I was thinking... what if I kept my super zoom (Tamron 18 mm - 270 mm) in a case under the seat in my car?

I understand the main concerns would be theft and temperature damage.

Most criminals in my town don’t rummage under seats.  So I’m not worried about theft.  But frying or freezing my best, most expensive lens is a concern.

thoughts?

thanks!
