Starting out bird photography

I shoot mainly portraits and weddings for business.  I'd like to get more into wildlife and bird photography as a hobby.  I just got a tamron 70-200mm G2 for wedding.  I rented a 2x tamron teleconverter and it worked fairly well, but autofocus wasn't as snappy as I was hoping.  I was considering purchasing one to use for wildlife/bird photography.  I'm also considering upgrading to a better crop body (than my SL1) to use for this hobby (currently have 5d mark iii, 6d and SL1)

Question 1: Should I go teleconverter route and get a 2x tamron teleconverter for this or should I look at 150-600mm lenses?

Question 2: What crop body should I consider if going used/affordable?
