Shooting running event

I enjoy shooting a few running/cycling events each year for a couple of local charities, with my camera club. I've noticed that photographers post far more images on Facebook than I do, leading to literally thousands of images for each event. I've been told that sports participants love to trawl through Facebook to find themselves. However, I personally can't see much point in posting images where the sportsman/woman's face is mostly covered by their hat, or their posture is unflattering.

In addition, one photographer, whose wife is a keen runner, criticized me for taking wide angle shots (which I'm still not great at, I admit), and said the "ideal" shot a runner is looking for is when they are caught mid-air, with both feet off the ground, and that's what I should be aiming for. I've been tending to do some wide angle for variety, and to give a sense of place, because so many of my friends have covered the tele end so well.

What are your thoughts? Could you post one or two of your favourite images to illustrate?
