Clue me in on star eating

I've read about this, and it seems to be like every photographer's worst nightmare.

But why is it such a talked about problem?

There are lots of stars in the sky, who's going to notice if a few go missing?

And if the do go missing, how hard can it be to just clone a few more in?

Okay, I can see that some might say that its cheating or that the purists are going to notice that the stars are in the wrong place.

Well pardon me for asking but... if you know where the stars are going to be, why not just clone them into the right place and then everyone's happy? And it's not cheating if that's what was actually there right? You're just fixing a software bug?

Clue me in!
