Thinking about getting this flash for my A7 II, good or bad idea?

Would this flash be of any use for me? I was thinking about it for doing portraits and indoor shots, but I'm not sure if this is the best way of going about this, but I've noticed some of my portraits and indoor shots are poorly lit on my 50mm 1.8, I feel they could use a bit more front lighting especially.

Is this a decent unit? I'm looking at cheap right now in order to try it out. I got the idea today while experimenting with photos in the light and seeing that my A7 II loves photos that are well lit, and dimly or uniformly lit photos look pretty poor and lack detail and contrast.

Here's a picture which seems to be well lit in the front, which brings out the subject and highlight details:

Here's another picture using flash outdoors which I think looks pretty good:

Here's a picture which is heavily backlit which I don't think is very good, could this photo have benefited from the use of daylight flash to bring out the highlights in the face and improve the image overall?

On the other hand, I could just forgo using flash altogether and just try to use natural light to "shoot away from the sun" and try to use natural light for frontlighting.

I've never used flash before. What's the best approach here when doing portraits? I want to avoid any possible obvious use of flash or any bad flash usage like is shown in this picture. How to avoid?:
