M50 Shadow Recovery Comparison
2

I'm looking at purchasing an M50, but have been wary about the 'traditional' criticisms of Canon sensors lagging behind the competition in terms of dynamic range and ISO performance.

So I thought I'd see for myself by downloading RAW files from the low light DPR studio test scene, and seeing how much detail and noise is brought out in underexposed areas when I lift exposure 2 stops in DXO Photolab.

I did this with cameras I have been considering purchasing - but I've had to use the Fuji X-A5 in place of the X-A7, which has only just been announced:

I'm pretty please with how well the M50 does here. A little more noise in the shadows compared to the A6400, but much better than the Fuji. I realise the X-A7 has a new sensor, but reports suggest this is mainly for improved AF and performance for 4K video. I haven't heard anything to suggest better DR or noise performance.

The G85's sensor is just not up to it - in resolution, noise and the horrible purple colour shift in the shadows when lifting exposure. The original exposure was correctly white balanced.

Canon EOS M50 (EOS Kiss M)
