85/1.4D on 36MP camera - still valid?

It's quite controversial, I read about people who say that old lenses don't do well on modern and pixel packed sensors, others say the new sensors give new life to old lenses...

Personally I resurrected the 35-70D and found it to be really really nice on my D800 (which is not the latest tech at all but, still, I love it and till it works it does really well), I am planning to take the 80-200 for a spin to find out about it too and even tho I own an 85/1.8G which I like a lot for male portraits (I shoot semi-candids in natural light) I lust the 85/1.4D since forever and was thinking to look up for one for my birthday.

Question is, does it still do well on modern sensors? I like to shoot wide open but, realistically, for my kind of non-posed shots ideally f2.8ish does better and I guess that by that aperture every f1.4 lens starts to do well but I'd love to read opinions from those who own and use it (not the kind of "my cousin..." or "I read...").

Any samples would be really welcome.

Grazie
