Depends on what you shoot.  Do you get paid to shoot an NFL game?  You had better have the proper gear and know how to use it if you want to get paid for another shoot.

You spend your photo days taking pictures of your cat just for your amusement?  Perhaps all you need to know is how to get the camera on your phone to function.  But you still need to learn that before you can take the first shot.

Like it or not, if you want to be a good photographer, you have to know how your gear works to make that happen.  It's like anything else; if you have to think about it, you'll probably miss that perfect shot.
