Need advice for flash settings.

Hi,

I'm sorry I'm being a bit lazy, but I'm pressed for time and I've never used my D5 body with flash at night in varying light. I was hoping somebody could give me a "safe bet" starting-point setting-wise.

I'll be shooting an outdoor night event with anywhere from near black distant background to concrete under varying stadium lights. People will be in mostly dark attire.

Using D5 + SB-910, I plan on using Manual Exposure, spot metering, iTTL-FP, 1/60th and anywhere from f/2 - f/5.6 for couples. Auto ISO.

I have e3 set to background only. I have e4 set to subject only. (Don't fully understand the interactions these settings have against or with each other).

Provided subjects are mostly dark-toned, background EV is all I'd like to tweak unless I open aperture up and start getting hot-foreheads. How can I achieve this? I'd like to max ISO at ~6400.

Also, what specific brings up "BL" function?

Any tips?

Thanks!
