Decent hotshoe mic for capturing ambient sounds?

I currently have a Takstar SGC598 plugged in to my Lumix G85 which I use for video when travelling with my family. My videos are mostly capturing clips to remind us of our travels, not so much vlogging style videos. I first bought this mic on the recommendation of many YouTubers, but now realize that the rave reviews were because they use it to speak directly in to the mic most of the time. I find that it's not so good when it comes to capturing ambient sounds of the city and nature. In fact I've read somewhere that even the high end Rode hotshoe mics are not very good once you're more than 4ft away. What is a good solution then, that is portable and still decent at capturing ambient sounds?

Panasonic G85
