Speedlite 90 ex on a bracket for macro

Using an 80 D and 20D. Manual settings.

I thought i might try a used 90ex on a bracket attached to a flash cord. I can mount the flash to the side of my camera and swing the bracket forward so the flash is at about a 45 degree angle to my subject. Not ideal but not bad either for a budget setup.

I did it with my 430ex and put it on manual flash. would set the power on 1/4 to 1/64. Works fine enough, but its heavy and awkward. Thats why I though Id try the 90ex.

Id have to do ETTL only. I tried flash compensation to see if I might be able to adjust the brightness of the flash, but it doesnt seem to make a difference.

Im sure Im missing something that should be obvious.

Silly idea?
