I've been an SX50 fan since it came out and have had three. The first died when I fell on it and destroyed the lens; the second, after in excess of 150,000 images, now has issues in extending and focusing the lens; the third is virtually new, purchased when it was one of the last new ones available. Long story short, I purchased an SX70 about a month ago and love the ergonomics and controls -- BUT, compared pictures from the SX50, I've been sorely disappointed with the SX70's image quality right out of the camera.

However, with a good bit of editing the SX70's images can be significantly improved. Here's just one photo comparison -- right out of the camera on top, after editing on the bottom --

100% agree.  I have had the SX40,50,60,70.  The 50 was the best overall.  No way perfect but very good.  I sold the new 60 to get the referb 50 as not too thrilled with the 60s IQ. Now not too thrilled with the 70 SOOTC  JPEGs either.

Just lately I tried the RAW setting and found after minor processing the images were an improvement.  What had me avoiding RAW was the overly-complex editing process.  I downloaded DPP only to confirm my original perception.  Having used Picasa for over 15 years I gave it a shot and found that simple can work.  The RAW images processed just fine and come off slightly better than JPEGs.

There has been definite improvements in the many upgrades except for image quality.  Many will disagree.  However jamming ever more pixels on tiny sensors, ever increasing zoom range and adding electronic gizmos has had a detrimental effect on IQ.

Just my 1/2 cent worth of inspiration.
