I would think the G9X Mark II would be the better option, you can read the review here: https://www.dpreview.com/reviews/canon-powershot-g9-x-mark-ii-review

To be honest, I think modern phone cameras are close to what this camera can do and so Is it worth the 500 dollars? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

The zoom is 3X, the iPhone Xs has a 2X zoom (I think Samsung and google may also have superior cameras as well) Throw in computational photography that is being embraced and the smart phone cameras are performing as good as inexpensive point and shoots.

But the phone is performing not you. I find cameras a completely different experience and much more fun to use. If you want some robotic machine to do it all for you fine.

The 1" sensored G9X despite its size is a bit more than a point and shoot.

There are instances where an inexpensive point and shoot may exceed that of a phone camera but that difference is shrinking imo. I guess it all depends on how you'll use the output, i.e., facebook/Instagram?
