You are correct. When I'm taking long exposures in dark environments I also take dark frames for reference (I just take several at progression of shutter speeds). It's additional work, but that's what it is. It's caused by many things including thermal causes and it's present in all cameras, it's just that some mask it better. People shooting astro can help you more.
