Anyone try removing a front lens element to make a macro lens?

I'm referring to the techique here:

https://petapixel.com/2019/08/30/this-simple-conversion-turns-any-zoom-lens-into-a-macro-lens/

Macro tubes only get one so far, and a bellows is a drag to tote around. The author is getting 2+ magnification. I've used reversing to get around that, but since I've got some old crappy zooms around anyway thought this might be interesting.

But I'm unsure about whether it could work with a prime, or lacks the elements. And what range of zoom would work, noting he used a fairly wide one.
