Either way, with my X100T the flash seems to be variable and I only get reliable lighting if I set the flash compensation to -1 1/2. If I leave it at zero, it blows things out. Aperture doesn't seem to matter, nor does shutter speed.

Have you experienced anything like this, or is it just my copy of the camera?

Should have been more specific. I used the small off camera flash. No tripod, camera in one, flash in other hand.

Oh, OK.  I only use the built in flash so my results might vary.  Good idea though, moving the flash to your other hand!
