I bought the G5 II to use while biking, as I'm past the age where I'm willing to carry a DSLR or even a mirrorless camera. I find the pictures are well exposed and sharp, even wide open at the telephoto end. The camera is easy to hold, and the controls work fine. The pop-up viewfinder works better than I though it would, and pulling the viewfinder forward is not an issue. The viewfinder diopter setting does not accidentally move.

Some general comments: The dedicated exposure compensation dial is very nice to have, especially since I also use Fujifilm cameras, which have a similar dial. The front dial (around the lens) is also OK; I think if Canon had applied a knurled finish to the knob (like on the latest G9) people would not complain about it, but it won't work any better. The lens is also good - portraits at 100 mm and f2.8 are sharp. (Attached is a photo taken at night.) Focus has not been an issue.

Everyone compares the camera to the SONY RX100 VII (so did I). Here's why I picked the Canon, in no particular order of importance

  1. Cheaper
  2. Faster lens
  3. Touchscreen controls work really well
  4. Grip and texture of camera body
  5. USB-C charging & operation.
  6. ND Filter
  7. Canon Colours

Niagara Falls area at night. ~ 105 mm (35mm equiv), f2.8, 1/20, ISO 1000, handheld, camera JPG

Agree completely Howard, and I have added (6) ND Filer and (7) Canon Colours
