As seen in another thread, we have differing opinions on this (which is fine). The main thing I tried to communicate from that is that yes, the A7 and A7II may be frustrating to some photographers, but to other photographers, especially ones on a budget who can't afford anything beyond the A7II, it may be the best option, and may even be a great option. Remember, different photographers have different budgets, styles, needs, standards, abilities, existing equipment, history...

I think the fixation on getting into FF prompts people to make bad decisions. Going into Sony FE on a shoestring budget can be such a decision.

Agreed. For many people, smaller sensors can produce more than satisfactory results.

I bought an A7II + Canon glass and adapter in the fall of 2016. It worked great for travel, but I am saddened by how many action shots I missed of a dog I had that passed. In retrospect, if I could go back, I'd probably have grabbed an A77II and a selection of A mount glass. I guess hindsight is 20/20.

Yea, depending on the genre, "Going into Sony FE on a shoestring budget" can be a bad decision, but for others, it could be a great fit. That being said, depending on how much you're spending, putting money into a dead system might work for now, but may end up not working out in the long run. Also, that being said maybe not because A-mount equipment is priced pretty low on the used market right now, so it might not be that big of a loss of you switch later.

Point being I think it's smarter to arrive at a camera as a choice guided by other decisions (what lenses do I need? how much performance do I need? how much of a priority is video? action? etc), rather than start from a camera or format and try to justify it after the fact. If I'm being honest I didn't need FF then and I probably still don't today. But the value FF delivers on lenses just makes it hard to beat for me, especially now.

Agreed, if you need fast AF for sports, the A7II is probably not the best option (though manually focusing on athletes that are far away isn't that hard). And yea, older DSLR full frame lenses can offer great value.
