Epson P800 released in 2015

Is it time for a new model?

All you'll get here is semi-informed speculation, because anyone who knows is subject to a non-disclosure agreement. That said, based on history, one might estimate that Epson may replace the P800 around December 2020. I say that because the P800 replaced the 3880 after a little less than six years (3880 introduced 8-31-09, P800 introduced 4-20-15). Also, Epson's most recently-introduced prosumer printer, the XP-15000, replaced the Artisan 1430 (1500W in some countries) after a little less than six years (Artisan 1430 introduced 1-9-12, XP-15000 introduced 12-4-17).

IMOPO, anyone wanting such a printer would be silly to wait well over a year on the hope that Epson might introduce something substantially better. Also, printers get discounted as they age, so the P800 you can buy today for $895 net of rebate (in the U.S.) might well be replaced with a new model that costs $1195 or so.

[ADDITION]

But of course all of that timing estimation assumes that new printer introductions are driven by some sort of fixed time-cycle. At this point, I have to think that the availability of significant improvements to put into the new model is probably a, and maybe the main, factor in determining when a new model comes out. As one set of examples, the P800 brought UltraChrome HD inks, replacing the 3880's UltraChrome K3 with Vivid Magenta inks, and the 3880 in turn replaced the 3800's UltraChrome K3 with the previous magenta inks. Does Epson have a pigment inkset newer than the P800's UltraChrome HD inks? Not that I'm aware of. Therefore I have no reason to expect a new printer to replace the P800. Might Epson have a new inkset ready to be introduced? Maybe, but I doubt anyone here knows.
