Thanks a lot Peter Kwok for that excellent explanation of the actual physical and resulting differences between electronic and mechanical shutter. This has been the first time I understood it.

My Pentax Q has a rolling electronic shutter that takes 1/13s to traverse the sensor!

I was all excited about mounting it on my Canon EOS telephoto lenses with an adapter to take advantage of its pixel density, equal to about 370MP on a FF sensor.  What I found, however, was that successive frames revealed horizontal slanting and vertical compression and expansion of the subject, which made a slide show pretty awkward.  A lens mount adapter with a leaf shutter would have been much more useful.  Most native Q lenses have their own leaf shutters.
