F/1.8 Lenses Used To Be Cheap—Why Are They $800 Now?
10

Could someone explain why 1.8 lenses for mirrorless full-framers cost roughly 3 to 4 times as much as their stablemates for DSLRs?

Are the new mirrorless lenses 300 percent better than the DSLR lenses? 30 percent better? 3 percent?

For DSLRs 35mm and 50mm f/1.8 lenses were generally the cheapest ones you could buy, and they always had great performance.

Flash forward and both the Sony and Nikon 35mm 1.8, lenses are $800 or more. Nikon's 50mm 1.8 is $600, three times the price of it's 50mm for DSLRs.
