RX100 lens sharpness tests, M1 vs M6
3

A recent thread (RX100 VII vs. Original RX100 - Image Quality?) has been discussing how the image quality of these cameras compared, with various opinions expressed, but no direct, side-by-side at different focal lengths. So I decided to do such a test.

The test images were shot:

  • Handheld, reflecting how these cameras are normally used, with OSS on
  • Using the rear screen with both cameras, as the RX100M1 doesn’t have an EVF
  • Aperture priority, f/2.8 (which means, in most cases, wide open)
  • No exposure correction
  • ISO125
  • Sunlight WB (but the lighting did vary slightly between shots)
  • RAW+JPEG
  • The RAWs were processed in DxO PhotoLab 2, with lens correction both on and off
  • The RX100M6 was shot at 24, 28, 50, 70 and 100mm equiv
  • The RX100 doesn’t allow such fine control, and so was shot at 28, 47, 53, 69 and 100mm equiv
  • All images are shown full-size, uncropped
  • In each case, three images are shown: OOC JPEG; RAW processed with lens corrections ON; and RAW processed with lens corrections turned OFF

The full set of test images are in

But here's a few examples, in this case at 28mm equiv:

RX100M6, from RAW, No lens corrections applied
