I'm a newb to photography experimenting with a Canon 700D.
I'm trying to get used to the autofocus modes.
I've noticed two things that are utterly perplexing:
1) Once I've gotten an object in focus, if I click the button right down there is a pause before the photo is taken.
2) There is a huge difference between what the screen shows me and the final image.
3) The image looks as if the aperture has been left open for a very long time, maybe even half a second, even when I've set the shutter speed to be very low.

What's going on here?

I would suggest a factory reset of the body and try again. I suspect that this may be a used camera (since it seems to be new to you and not a new model), and if so, the previous owner may have left some odd settings.

Also, so sample photos with exif would be helpful.
