If there are no experts better able to explain it, I'd suggest you have a look at these two articles on the Lens Rentals blog:

https://wordpress.lensrentals.com/blog/2011/02/who-invented-the-telephoto-lens/

https://www.lensrentals.com/blog/2011/03/the-development-of-wide-angle-lenses/

Seems to me the basic answer is:

  • wide angle and telephoto are opposite optical problems
  • having one lens that tries to do both is inherently paradoxical. Although there have been some "unicorn" lenses that seem to do it well (e.g., Oly 12-100mm, Pana 10-25mm (?)), the more you try to stretch the range on either side, the more unicorn-like the lens design has to be

In other words, covering, say, an 8-70mm f4-5.6 m43 mount lens is probably theoretically possible. BUT having that lens yield acceptable sharpness, aberrations, tolerate mass manufacturing, and meet a size/cost/weight target that would make it commercially viable, well... that's probably just a bridge too far.

Thank you for the links and the summary. I will check them out.
