Shooting in a Brightly Lit Room
3

I'm taking pictures at an awards ceremony, which is held in a room with floor to ceiling windows including the wall behind the podium. How do I reliably meter for the people instead of the background? I really need to learn how to use all the settings on my camera. Here are my pictures from last year's ceremony. As you can see people are ok, but the background is really blown out. They were taken with a Nikon D40. This year I'll be using a Nikon D3200. Thanks for your help.
