This lens is sharp, very fast and with the A9 very accurate. However, until I bought the 200-600 I was not happy with Sony colours, the 200-600 changed that dramatically. Who knew..

I have been all Canon for the past 15 years and new to Sony (since November)

I still find the 100-400mm to be a little bit sharper than the 200-600mm, but I like the extra reach natively. I like the 200-600mm better for capturing Birds-in-Flight as I can still it on a gimbal and balance it only once as it has an internal zoom, then 100-400mm not so much. Though hand holding the 100-400mm is the clear winner in that department. I find the colors to be better on the 200-600mm, but I never really concerned about colors as it's easily corrected in post (In my opinion).

Perhaps you have a better 100-400 than me. While I agree that landscape and wildlife colours don't bother me often and are easily adjusted, I shoot aircraft a lot where the liveries have well defined colours that have never seemed right and rarely could be adjusted to suit and I do colour calibrate bodies and monitors. The very first thing I noticed with the 200-400 was the colours just looked right.

As for a gimbal. It's ok for pelicans and herons but virtually all other birds I need to hand hold. That's why I bought into Sony in the first place. My EF 600 f/4 II is just to heavy for me to shoot handheld for long.

The guys who shoot snipe and swallows in flight amaze me.  I can't get the damned things in the frame without duct taping them to a log:)
