Re: Questions About Sensor Size and Pixel Pitch

Some distant and fading memory pops up in my mind.

When the 4/3 system is designed, the sensor size is 18mm x 13.5mm.

By that time, the 4-5 MP sensor is norm and 8-10 MP is still daydream. The 4/3 consortium says the spec also could hold the resolution up to 24 MP without problem.

  • Ironny, at that time period, the lenses are built with that 24 MP resolution too but the sensor technology can't. It's max at 12 MP. By nowadays, the tech could build the 24 mp but they aren't willing to build that hi-res lens.

The 24 MP on 18.0*13.5 mm area equals to 4.15 μM pixel pitch.

But nowadays pixel can be reduced to 3.75μ "without problem".

So?

The 4/3 system would be max at around 35 MP resolution.

System's resolution is mainly limited by its lenses, not sensor size.
