A7M3 + Sony 200-600 vs 100-400 + 1.4 TC vs A6500 + 100-400 - image quality comparison @ 600

This is a quick image quality comparison on a Sony A7M3. Same camera settings, manual focus (on the license plate), shutter priority, lens mounted on a tripod. Also included a photo with the A6500 + 100-400 at 400 (600 FF Equivalent). The only post-processing was to black out license plate information and someone in the background.

Make you own conclusion.

Focus tracking (cars driving up my street about 25mph) seem very similar - hard to tell which has a better hit rate - my skills probably aren't the best.

As expected 200-600 is much bigger and heavier. Hand holding this lens for more than an hour would not be enjoyable. The 100-400 + 1.4TC isn't that much better. I would tend you use these both on a tripod with gimbal.

I travel several times a year with photography in mind and have never taken the 100-400 on a plane (I have the 70-300 for that). I wouldn't even think about it with the 200-600, unless I was going on an African photo safari.

Now the tough choice - which one to keep?

A7M3 + 200-600 @ 600

A7M3 + 100-400 + 1.4 TC @ 560

A6500 + 100-400 (600 FF Equivalent)

Sony a6500
