Dear lighting experts, why has nobody made a portable mini-flash?

Here's what I mean, a flash that is literally as compact as those that sit atop many compact cameras, but seem to be missing from many models as of late (ex: SONY Rx1 Rii, RIcoh GRiii, Zeis ZX1, etc).

Is the market demand not big enough? I've seen equally niche products made in this industry. A little cube flash that could fit on a hotshoe and be no less effective than a pop up flash is all I ask. When people talk about all the flash sync abilities of these cameras, and then I look at the smallest known compatible flash, I am shaking my head. Why would I carry these compact cameras, and a big fat flash and another big fat receiver to stick on top. These cameras may as well have no flash sync at all, because who is actually walking around and doing that? Fewer people I suspect than would buy the product I am imagining in this post.

Thoughts?
