The Standard for Quality Originates Here

This is a fantasy lens. The user has to have the brainpower to use it correctly, however. As one reviewer noted, it has a very large MFD (19').

I also shoot the 400 f/2.8 FL ED, which has even higher resolution, more incredible bokeh, but nowhere near the reach. For small birds, the Nikkor 800mm f/5.6E FL ED VR is simply the best possible option available anywhere.

Those who by the 600mm for birding simply do so as a compromise. Even with the 800mm, I find myself cropping shooting small birds, and there is almost no instance where a 600 mm would suffice.

For closer imagery, the 400mm FL ED eclipses the 600mm. In fine, if you are a 100% bird photographer, this is the best lens you can possibly get for the job.
