I had forgotten how good the 50 mm Art lens is. I tested one back in June of 2014 and said that it was the best Sigma lens I have used, by far. I went back and looked at some of the images form that test and remember why I thought the lens was so good. Here are some of the images from those tests: All made with the SD1 Merrill. Look at these full size in the gallery to see how much detail this lens can render!

I hope they have a 50 mm L-mount lens by the time the ff camera is released, if not I will get the 50 mm Art lens and adapter for the L-mount1

PS. I have lots more images if anyone is interested!

In looking carefully at these samples Larry, there is not even the slightest "hint" of halo and the detail is superb indeed.

Even more than the detail, the absence of halos are, in my opinion, the true test of both the sensor and the lens and what makes the Sigma cameras so special.

High resolution CFA sensors have come a long way, but unless one is printing at huge sizes or cropping a tremendous amount, the SD1 has all that is needed for the photographer. These images with the 50mm Art lens are, frankly, the only ones I've seen on a dSLR that can equal my little DP2 Merrill for halo-free fine resolution.

If I have the means when the FF is released, this would be my first choice for an all-around solution. Probably the 50mm Art plus a 60-600mm zoom would just about be the ultimate tools for me. Lately, I've been shooting a lot with my Nikon D700 which is only a 12-megapixel sensor, but by using Topaz's gigapixel AI I've been able to get images which will print at about any size I want. Having a 20 mp full-frame Sigma and these two lenses would just about be all I believe I would ever want. I rarely use my 24mp D7200 these days because the old D700 does such a nice job and is as versatile as I need. Having not been able to afford an SD1, I've been hoping that a full-frame solution would be available from Sigma and hoping it would be in the original X3F configuration.

Thanks for the samples and reinforcing my conviction that it's been worth waiting for.

Best regards,

Lin

Thanks for the comments Lin:  they reflect my feeling exactly.  I have not shot the 60-600 mm lens so I can not comment.  I have used the 105-600 mm Sports lens and it is super in every way.  However if the FF is a mirrorless camera (with the same view finder qualities as the sd Quarrtos), I will probably use the long zoom on the SD1 Merrill.
