SD14 out of the attic - playing with IR B&W
3

Tried full spectrum and with a Cokin 89B

Filtered looks better.

Focus achieved by setting f/11 and focusing just to the left of the infinity symbol.

Hand held 1/100th and 1/50th @ISO50 seems to work OK in today's bright-ish sunshine in London.

Surprisingly, the filter doesn't reduce the exposure very much even though it makes the viewfinder completely black. Most of the energy the sensor sees normally must be IR.

Very low noise as well.

No real idea how to post process (in Lightroom). So far tried:

  • Switch to B&W
  • high-contrast tone curve
  • ND grad mask on the sky to darken things
  • Quite substantial amounts of sharpening and clarity

Generally, the handful of test shots I have done this morning, once you switch to B&W to get rid of the deep magenta cast, the images seem quite easy to get to an acceptable, recognisable image state. This is good considering how much trouble many people have producing viewable IR images. However, it is a long way from making images worth looking at!

Any tips on how to process IR B&W to give that deep contrast, crisp tones look?

Example image to follow.
