Should I buy EF lenses regardless of camera system?

Hello all!

I am a journalism student looking to invest in a professional camera system sometime soon, but I'm unsure which one at present. My current personal camera is a Sony a6000, but most of the time I shoot on a Canon 5D III or IV rented from my school.

I'd like a camera for both my video and photo needs (I also shoot short documentaries), but no camera does everything I want at present so I think I'm going to hold off to see what the A7s III and Canon pro mirrorless bring.

My question at this point is: Why shouldn't I just start investing in EF glass? Here's my reasoning:

  1. It can be mounted on any of the camera systems I would consider (Sony via MC-11 or Speedbooster, Panasonic via MC-21, EOS R via EF adapter, straight on to any 5D or 1DX)
  2. The autofocus, while not quite native, is pretty darn good nowadays and will only get better (especially for EOS R and Sony with the MC-11)
  3. EF lenses are cheap, sharp, tough and widely available used online (~$400 for a used 24-105 f4 IS, ~$600 for a used Sigma 35 f1.4)
  4. I can mount it on any B-cam I might get from school, or on most commercial cinema cameras
  5. EF lenses are relatively easy to pull focus with on if I had to go manual

What am I missing here? Am I overestimating the AF performance and functionality with adapters?
