Don't believe anyone said that "EC doesn't matter at all" in A or S priority AE, if what you mean is that it doesn't do anything, but only works in P mode. Of course it works in all three AE modes. I almost always shoot in A mode, and +/- EC  most of my shots with the back wheel.
