New M100 experience
2

Just received a refurb M100 and efm 15-45mm lens as a refurb. Purchased during a special sale for a bargain of $280. I though it would make a nice addition to my M5 and I could carry 2 M cameras and avoid lens changes and have a spare in case of a camera failure. So far, a nice small camera and I like the touch screen approach for nearly all controls. I like that the camera is not loaded with so many features that I can't remember how to operate the device. Now the not so good. I read about users' experience with this kit lens, but I thought I would take the chance. The lens seems fairly solid and well made; however, the optics are quite disappointing even for a kit lens. The lens is sharp in the center even wide open, but the edges are very soft. Not really usable. From about 15-24mm, f5.6 greats a decent lens. From 28-45mm, f8 is satisfactory except at 45mm where the entire right edge remains somewhat soft. f11 fixes this issue at 45mm but creates a very slow lens for moderate tele use. Of course, the old adage was 1-2 stops down for best lens IQ, but start out a f6.7 and following the adage creates a very slow lens. Canon won't just exchange the lens. Return the whole kit, keep it, or send the lens for possible replacement. I don't believe this lens can be fixed. If I keep the whole kit, I will usually shoot in manual mode. Set the ISO to auto, f8, and suitable shutter speed. The ISO can then flex to meet shutter speed and aperture. I find this approach works very well with less fiddling of settings. The smart auto mode is not very useful because it often picks apertures not producing the best IQ. Canon really needs fix their kits lens IQ for consistent results without so much copy variation.
