Back to The Future: Using Small Sensors to Deal With Narrow Depth of Field

I was struck by Mark Berkery's images taken with the Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ5 and the Panasonic DMC-G5 & G6. These are beautiful and spectacular images, wonderfully sharp, with generous depth of field. I was actually poised to purchase the Lumix DMC-FZ5, but I have a reservation regarding the resolution on these images. Most were obviously cropped. To my mind, if I cannot print 11X17 prints of an image, I don't find it usable, no matter how lovely it is. I would appreciate any comments on these misgivings. Is using a smaller sensor size a viable option given my printing requirements? Will I be disappointed with the DMC-FZ5 (with a bit of cropping) in this respect? Are there more recent small sensor compacts that offer a viable alternative?

Thanks,

-Charles
