Such things as provenance, how it was created (hand-made vs. mass produced etc.), and who created it (monkey, elephant) are very important.

Honestly, aside from any care about the worth of the thing, I'd rather have an elephant painting on my wall, than a Peter Lik photo. I'm not saying that Peter Lick isn't skilled at what he does (he most clearly is!), I just find his work pretty cliche and at least with the elephant painting I would have an interesting backstory to go with the piece...
