in other words how far down the rabbit hole should you chase small improvements in gear.

will it translate to much better images if you get a lens which score 7% more on a optical test ?

is it worth it to ebay gear because a new model has 60 mp - not 38 ?

these are questions that boggle the mind

You should not chase small improvements! Go with the best 5 lenses you can for a resolution you care about. If 20MP is good, good lenses for this are many, not so if you go for 61MP.

So like you should stop worring about a car beyond 120 mph if in the USA, likewise, you should stop caring about a lens if the 30 lp / mm are good for you already, and consider only based on the kind of photos you make the most (night landscape? portrait? sports? macro? etc).
