I've had my R for about 2 months now and experienced my first lockup last week while on vacation. I sent an email to Canon Support with configuration details. This was their response -

"This could be a memory card issue if you are using the Ultra cards and shooting with HDR or Dual Pixel RAW enabled..."

Since they responded with a possible trigger, they must be getting regular complaints or reports of lockups. I was shooting with a San Disk Ultra card, but did not have HDR or Dual Pixel RAW enabled. I sent the camera to their repair depot to have it checked out.

Treat your R better and use a SanDisk Extreme PRO card, especially now that the prices of UHS-I SD cards are quite low.

The 64GB card is only $20!

Yep... what he said! The 256GB cards are only $68.99. I like the 256GB cards, because they format correctly for 4K - without breaking up the files into 4GB pieces. Excellent cards!

+1 on the SanDisk Extreme Pro!

Also, I think any card that is SDXC will format to exFAT (and support >4GB files). For this line, any one that is 64GB or larger in capacity will work.
